Australian Politics: A Brief Overview
Australia’s system of government is unique in such a way that it has a combination of British practices in governing as well as following the North American system. But what makes their government appealing is that they are also unique—incomparable to other countries.
Pioneer in Modern Democracy
It was in the year 1901 when over 6 colonies of Britain have federate and formed the “Commonwealth of Australia”. They practice democracy which includes following the principles of “one man, one vote and Women suffrage”. Since during that time, people are hard to manage and many politicians manipulated votes by intimidating people, Australia became the first country who used reformations that has now played a big role in our modern democracy.
The Government System
Australia’s basis in governing is based on Parliament, in which it has two divisions—the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are lots specific ministers on each of the Division and they play part on deciding when it comes to polices that should be implemented. Cabinet meetings are confidential and only the final decision will be announced openly.
Despite the independency of Australia, the Queen of Britain which is Queen Elizabeth has been called the “Queen of Australia” as well, but acts as the Governor-General. She can have great powers, however, the decisions are still held by the ministers.
Comparing the British and Australian Government, the Australian has written constitution. It includes the role of the federal government when it comes to the immigration processes, defense, trading, as well as relations to foreign countries.
Voting
It has been practiced by Australia that the voting is held every three years. When people reach the age of 18, they are now required to vote on federal or state.
Australian politics are indeed impressive. They practice Human Rights and have citizens which are disciplined enough to respect foreigners coming in the country.
